Week Forty-Two: Fall

fall (42/52)

Week Forty-Two: October 15th- 21st (22nd), 2010

I do my best to find the beautify in fall, but often times, it just makes me sad. I'm the summer type.

A day late on this week's shot. Was hired for a new teaching position this week (and began the next day). Hooray!! But the side-effect is that I'll definitely have a lot less time to devote to this project for the next few weeks (but weeks 50-52 should be awesome, ha ha).

Athéna (41/52)

Week Forty-One Redux: October 8th- 14th, 2010

Statue in Parc Mont-Royal, Montreal.

I was really excited for my trip to Montreal last week not just to spend time with my best friend who moved away a few months ago, but also for the photographic opportunities new cities always present. I'm a little disappointed with how the later turned out: I didn't even take my camera out of the bag for the first few days, and even when I did during the last leg of the trip, I really didn't commit myself. Oh well. As much as I love this art form, I think there's a lot to be said with enjoying the moment and seeing with your eyes, not just through your lens. Although I wish I had more photos to show for my time in Montreal, I don't regret how I spent any of my time while I was there.

Week Forty-One: October 8th- 14th, 2010

Spending a few days in Montreal this month visiting a friend. The leaves in fall here cover a far broader spectrum than they do at home.

Uploading two shots this week for the 52 project to make up for one I lost a few months ago.

Week Thirty-Nine: September 24th- 30th (plus October 1st), 2010

One day past my deadline this week. No apologies though- I got called for an interview for Friday morning, so between juggling a conference I was attending Thursday night and preparing for the interview, I just didn't have the time. Of course, that could have been avoided if I hadn't waited until last minute, but whatever, ha ha.

My photos have seemed to take on a darker element the last few weeks. I kinda like it.

Week Thirty-Eight: September 17th- 23rd, 2010

It was 11pm on Thursday- the night of my weekly deadline for the project- that I realized I didn't have a shot to publish yet this week. Considering I had a fever and an hour, I'm really happy with how this turned out.

Week Thirty-Seven: The Crestliner

the crestliner

Week Thirty-Seven: September 10th- 16th, 2010

Our neighbors at the lake have this older boat- I would say from the 1960's judging by some of the logos on the trailer it sits on (I might upload one or two some time down the road). I've always meant to use it for this project somehow because it looks so cool, but I felt kind of strange just walking up to their boat and taking pictures. They haven't been at the lake a lot this year, and last weekend was my last time out there until next Spring so it was now or never. They weren't out anyway.

Half of the logo on this side of the boat is worn off- I'm trying to upload the logo from the other side so you can what it looks like in it's entirety.

statuesque... but actually a statue

Week Thirty-Six: September 3rd- 9th, 2010

Statue of a deer, part of my mom's favourite lamp in her living room. Of course, the harsh light coming from behind the lampshade made it difficult to get the dynamic range right- the antlers are far more exposed than the rest of the deer.

I'm behind on uploading again. This is the shot from two weeks ago- I'll upload week 37's photo in a couple of days.

Week Thirty-Five: Bug Trails

Moth Trails (34/52)

Week Thirty-Five: August 27th- September 2nd, 2010

Not perfect and definitely bit more processing than I've been doing with this project, I basically desaturated the yellow tones because the leave on the trees, reflecting the light from the lamp, overpowered the light trails left from the months. They leaves were unavoidable because if I shifted my camera to the left or right even a little bit, the light from the lamp blew out the entire exposure.

Fun experiment though- if the bugs don't die with the fall weather too soon, I will try this type of thing again yet this year.

rainbow (32/52)

Week 32: August 6th- 12th, 2010

Stitched together from several photos...

I drove to Grand Forks with my mom last weekend and as we got closer to the city, it began to pour rain. This rainbow emerged and it framed the highway (as if we were going to drive right under the arch), and at another point, we could see the end of the rainbow as if it were only a few feet from my car. Unfortunately there was no where to pull over and take out the camera. We stopped at the first exit we could- photos never do things like that justice.

One of those "happy accident" shots. I had planned on doing a full-frame shot of just the baking sheet (same one as 17/52, lol), the sheep cookies, and the cutter. But as I was setting up I accidentally shot this. Not a perfect shot but I love the warped perspective and all of the random details.

And my love of square orientation continues...

One of my favourite things about Spring and Summer is not only the warmer weather but the fact that when I wake up for work the Sun is already out. If it's not cloudy my apartment will fill up with this amazing warm lighting. I can't get enough of it.

Ugly and dirty- a bit of a departure from last week's photo's bright and pretty colours. I almost posted another picture instead just to make a smoother transition but I don't think it had the same impact as this one.

Also, I think I'm in love with square orientations.

There was no chocolate Easter Morning for me this year, so I bought Mini Eggs on clearance on Tuesday to make up for the fact. I put a few in a cup- portion control. Once I saw them there I knew it had to be my weekly shot- I love these colours. Which means the photos I shot over the weekend for this week's post will just have to go somewhere else. Oh well.

Everything is closed here on Good Friday and all of my friends and family are out of town. I was planning on spending the day outside and going on a photowalk but the weather didn't cooperate.

So I spend the day in my bedroom drinking coffee, reading, and working on my laptop (this was taken while doing the later).

Week Twelve: March 19th-25th, 2010

Oh boy. A week late posting this, AND I was a day late taking it.

Excuses, excuses, I know- but in my defense I did take several pictures last week, but most of them were in the documenting-for-legal-and-insurance variety more than for any artistic purpose. I had water (or something) leaking into my apartment from my bedroom ceiling a couple of times last week- and my landlord still hasn't figured out. AND THEN- my Macbook power cord caught on fire (hence the delay in posting).

To give this photo at least a brief moment of attention, I'll upload this week's photo tomorrow.

I was down with the flu for the weekend, and turned 24 yesterday, so my energy levels were pretty low today. So I decided to experiment with some things around my desk, some unwashed glasses from last night's festivities, and my tried-and-true night table lamp. Turned out to be a very fun experiment.

Week Ten: March 5th-11th, 2010

My Vancouver trip was short but sweet. One of the highlights of the trip for me was my visit to Granville Island- a harbour and public marketplace with lots of music, people, shops, and food. This was very close to the boats- an office for a cruise line. I couldn't resist these colours.

Week Nine: Dome

Took this between meetings today. My DLSR has been acting up (meter is not reading properly) so my Vancouver pictures, the very few I've had time to take, aren't what I'd like them to be. Oh well, I'm happy this one.

Also, on an interesting note: lots of Nikon users in Vancouver. In Winnipeg I tend to be the odd one out in a cloud of Canon users.

Week Eight: February 19-25, 2010

Probably one of the things I was most excited to receive on Christmas morning a couple of months ago. These are EVERYWHERE right now as everyone I know, myself included, seems to have caught Olympic fever.

I broke a lamp in the taking of this picture... whoops.

I might be a bit behind posting next week's photo as I'll actually be in Vancouver this time next week. Unfortunately, not in time to catch any Olympic fun, but on the bright side, none of the crowds either.

Week Six: February 5th-11th, 2010

I've been in this building since August of 2004. In that time, the building owners have never hired window washers (it's a high rise, so it's not accessible to those of us leasing space). It's bad enough now that I can't see out of the left side. Maybe it's time for a formal complaint...

Week Five: Pineapple

Week Five: January 29- February 4, 2010

I've been fighting off a flu this week and so I've been pretty uninspired (and lazy). This bought this pineapple the other day after hearing some other teachers in the staff room talk about how great the pineapple in our grocery stores is right now (strawberries, very out of season, are not). So, I added some much needed Vitamin C to my diet, and tried my hand at a little food photography.

I also noticed a strange pattern in my photography while looking over my Flickr Photostream tonight: Anytime I use negative space or asymmetry in a photo, almost always, the subject is on the right-hand side of the frame. Something I'm going to try to pay more attention to in the future.

Week Three: January 22nd-28th, 2010

I had fun with this one.

Originally I had an idea to have a photo titled "indulgence". I collected a month's worth of chocolate wrappers, and I was going to shoot them on the floor by my bed, with a bottle of some sort of alcohol, and fashion magazines. I wasn't really thrilled with the results. Maybe I'll try something like that again in a few weeks.

Anyhow, I really liked the look of the gin bottle, and started to experiment. This was taken on my nightstand with the lamp on the floor behind it.

Week Three: Hoar Frost

Week Three: January 15th-21st, 2010

I really resented having to work on Tuesday- thanks to lots of fog overnight, my city was coated with hoar frost (more than I've ever seen before!) and all I wanted to do was hang out with my camera. Oh well. As I was substitute teaching, I was able to sneak out for five minutes at recess and take this.

As a photographer, I probably shouldn't admit this, but the photo doesn't do what I saw justice. There was no way to capture all of the bright whites (without overexposing), and how, well, fake, the whole city looked that day. Kind of reminded me of this:

Anyhow, for the photo...
